System Overview

The wireless Sensor units measure temperature and humidity by a user specified sampling interval. The acquired data from all the sensors is sent to the Coordinator which in turn communicates it to the Local Manager where the data is stored. The Local Manager also synchronizes with our Cloud Service CultureBee so that users can access their data anywhere. Via the Cloud Service the Control Boxes can be operated which allows for remote control of the system. The data is either transferred directly between the Sensors and the Coordinator or via Routers which acts as network extenders. Please read more below about the features of the different system parts.

Wiotech has developed all the products with own hardware and software. The products have a modular design and can be used to establish a local sensor network as needed.


The different parts of the system:


Sensor Module

One of the biggest advantages of our wireless solutions is that our sensor modules are battery powered and provide up to 10 years of battery lifetime, whilst maintaining the radio range up to 1.6 kilometres line-of-sight propagation. The battery-powered sensor module provides the following features:

  • Temperature and relative humidity measurement
  • Battery lifetime up to 10 years
  •  3.6 V lithium battery
  • Programmable sampling interval (from 1 second)
  • Relative humidity mesurament range (0 – 95 %)
  • Temperature mesurament range (-10 – +50 °C)
  • Response time: 38 s

Coordinator

The Coordinator is Wiotech’s intelligent hub in the wireless sensor network. It is a vital device and is the heart of  the sensor network. The Coordinator has the following features:

  • Enables wireless sensor network creation
  • AES128 bits encryption activated
  • It coordinates all the sensor units with the Local Manager

Router

Appearance-wise, the router is almost identical to the coordinator, but the electronics inside are different. The router is a network relay, which expands the radio range of the wireless sensor network. The build-in intelligence and mesh feature also increase system stability and reliability by the addition of routers. The router carries the following features:

  • Used to expand the wireless sensor network
  • Relaying radio signals in the wireless sensor network
  • Can be used as a sensor or control unit

Sensor Module for measurement of  moisture content in wood

This version of our sensor module is screwed onto the wood where it measure the moisture content of the material. Just like our other sensor, the biggest advantages of our wireless solutions is that our sensor modules are battery powered and provide up to 10 years of battery lifetime, whilst maintaining the radio range up to 1.6 kilometres line-of-sight propagation. Local Manager

The Local Manager works as the gateway to synchronize data between the wireless sensor network and the remote main server (cloud service CultureBee). It is also the central control unit for each wireless sensor network. It holds the following features:

  • Gateway between the wireless sensor network and the remote main server (cloud service CultureBee)
  • Local data storage and repository
  • Synchronizes sensor data and control commands between the wireless sensor network and the remote main server
  • Local control function for different control devices
  • Contains advanced control algorithms for the entire system

CultureBee Cloud Service

The remote main server provides a user interface via internet. It is an online platform for cloud service which supports the following features:

  • Tools for analysis
  • Remote control
  • Scheduling function
  • Default setpoint configuration

Control Box

The control box can be used to turn on/off various machines by switching the electrical power supply to the unit. The unit being controlled can be operated physically on the box or wirelessly via the Local Manager. One can also add intelligence to the control box as required. For example, to control an electrical heater or de-humidifier is easily done by setting the control parameters in the Local Manager or through the cloud service CultureBee. The sensors provide the feedback data for automatic control purpose. Another useful feature easily configured is scheduling, which allows for various setpoints, e.g., temperature and relative humidity value settings at a pre-determined time of the day. The Local Manager will automatically execute the desired control algorithm.
